Prince Harry will likely head back to the U.K. for the first time since stepping down as a senior royal last year to attend the funeral of his grandfather Prince Philip, according to sources who spoke to the New York Post.
The Duke of Sussex was already rumored to be planning a reunion with his family this summer to attend the unveiling of a statue dedicated to his late mother Princess Diana, but Philip’s passing has moved up that timeline. Sources who spoke to the Post are doubtful, however, that his wife Meghan Markle will be able to join him as she is currently very pregnant with their second child and is due early this summer. They added that while she very much wants to be by Harry’s side for this sad occasion, the decision of whether or not she will be able to make the 12 hour trip from California to England will be left up to her doctors. “Harry was extremely close to his grandfather,” the royal source said. “He will, of course, be there, no matter how difficult relations are between the Sussexes and the family.”
In a video with James Corden from February, Harry revealed that, despite the distance and the pandemic, he and Meghan had managed to stay in touch with his grandparents and even got them doing video calls. He explained, “We’ve Zoomed them a few times. They’ve seen Archie running around.” However, just because they were able to get Prince Philip on a Zoom call, doesn’t necessarily mean the nonagenarian liked it as Harry humorously recalled that instead of clicking a button to exit the call, the royal would simply slam his laptop shut and walk away.
As per his wishes, Prince Philip will not receive a state funeral, but will lie in state at Windsor Castle until a service at St. George’s Chapel, where Harry and Meghan married in 2018. Due to the pandemic, the public has been “regretfully requested” not to attend.
